Ra- Ra- Rasputin (Burda 7381)

My son is SO skinny! It is hard to find pants that fit his 28 waist. And he is tall. I see now that elastic may just become one of his friends until I become confident enough to make a more tailored pair of pants for men. I tried to experiment on my husband but he wasn’t having it. Lol I find it kind of hard to certain garments for men - especially the picky ones in my life.

Burda patterns are said to be good patterns. I have quite a few of them and just had not the time to put any together until now.

 

Bradley saw this pattern while I was shopping one of Hancock’s famous sales. It was my first time even seeing these patterns on sale. (I have a few I had already bought off Ebay.) I do remember about five years ago I had asked the sales lady if they sold Burda’s here and she told me they had stopped a while back and didn’t know if they would start again. I had been stationed in Germany and fell in love with Burda, but I didn’t know the language that well and decided it really wasn’t worth paying that much for a pattern only to sew it blindly. But, whadaya’ know? Let there be Burda!

 

The description on the pattern pack says: Burda Young; Shorts; semi-fitted

 

And it fits US sizes 34 to 46. I cut the smallest -34. I really thought this was going to be huge on him. IT WAS NOT! Granted it’s a tad bit but not a whole lot like I thought it would be. I think it’s also because I did not do the elastic like the pattern calls. I did my own way.

 

He had originally asked for View B, the pair with the cargo pockets. Then he changed to wanting the pair the huge side patch pockets. Then went to wanting ALL the pockets on one pair! Naw, Buddy.

 

I used a medium weight khaki twill that I’d bought for $1.99 a yard from Hancock a WHILE ago. Another stash buster item. I still about 4 more yards left. What else can I make? Not sure, but I did run across Simplicity 2648. I may just redo this one again. Here’s the first go around. I love LOVE it. The Anniversary Dress 2010.

I lengthened the legs into pant length and inserted my elastic differently. These were the only two pattern deviations that I’d done.

I love that this pattern is really simple and easy to make. There is no fly opening. You just pulled them on and off.

It’s kind of hard to get my boys to take photos so I am happy to deal with the ones I have.

I put a good good crease in these pants.

He looks like Rasputin to me in this shot.

He said he had swag....

Now he says he’s the Thinking Man.

 

Now back to the Rasputin shot. It was derived from the Wii game Just Dance 2.

I love to see my son do that dance. Lol. I think he looks like him in this pose. So, here’s to you Rasputin. I wish I could sneak a video of Bradley doing it. But since he hasn’t let that happen, here’s what you get.

Fabric Stash 2011 - Kwik Sew 2763

I have been working on this top for a while since the beginning of the contest. I made this polo style top for my youngest son a while ago. (He’s the only male brave enough to allow me to sew for him.) Now, I am doing the same pattern for the fabric stash contest in a green pique knit. The red is a pique also. My son asked me to do this top and make sure the stripes go up and down this time. His words are that they are supposed to be on the right side. Well umm with all the work I done trying to make sure his stripes were on the right side:

                             

Here I was trying to line up the back and get those stripes looking good.             

Stripes are really a PIA! Here, I was trying to line up the front stripes so that they would match with the ones on the back. 

I am rechecking the stripes here on the back pattern piece.

They still ended up on the left side! LOL.

You think that maybe I can get away with saying, “Well, they are on the right side. My right side.”? I tried it and it didn’t work but he is happy with it anyway.

Oh I have an extra model who has to be in photos.

Posing. I know you do not see any buttons on the top. This is because the little munchkin in the previous photo got a hold of the buttons and now I have to buy more. But that’s good because I had matching green buttons and my son said he’d like black better. OK cool, so that gives me a reason to go to the fabric store and catch the President’s Day sale. 

Here is the shot from the back. I am kinda liking these stripes. Yeah. And once again, the Dream Girls had to get their shots taken too.

 

 

 

Here is the inside back facing. I am not sure if the pattern called for this part to be interfaced or not. I didn’t refer back to the instructions because I remembered how it went together the first time. I didn’t interface it, though I did interface the front because that part would get lots of handling with closing and opening buttons.

Here are the front and back collars. I wanted the black stripe to be on the edge but that didn’t happen. It’s ok, though, it is still cute and most important, my son likes it. I still have to make that run and get buttons in the morning.

Kwik * Sew - Red Polo

Ok, this is the first time I have ever sewn a Kwik Sew. I must admit the name fits well. I was at first a bit timid but I quickly got over that. Being time to go back to school and I have this awesome talent that I have been blessed with, I took some initiation into my own hands and made a polo for my youngest son. In the stores they can range from about $32 to $8 (if they are on a good sale). I really like this pattern and plan on making one in green just like this one. I bought the fabric from my now favorite online fabric store http://www.fabric.com/. Without all the mouthing off (good for nothign typing [talking]), I'll now give you the pictures. After you read the review.

Pattern Description: Men's shirt and shorts

Pattern Sizing: All in one from small to xxlarge. I cut the size small because my son has the height of King Kong and the weight of JJ Evans...On Good Times. (Google it)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Oh yes. Just don't take a close look at the collar! lol

Were the instructions easy to follow? YEAP and I got worked up for nothing! Ha! This pattern lived up to its name...

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I loved EVERYTHING! So that leaves nothing to dislike.

Fabric Used: I think it was a golf knit (from the website) btu what ever that is from the list of choices....

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I cut off 2 and 1/2 inches from the hem because even though my son is tall he's not in the sky yet. The seams were supposed to be sewn at 1/4 but I sewd (sp) at 5/8 to kind of bring down the size for to fit my string bean. Oh yeah the shorts are sewn at 5/8.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I plan on doing it in a green just like the red but my sone wants me to flip the stripe but the stretch doesn't go that way. But ummm I bought 3 or 4 yards at 1.95 of each color so I'll try it and see if it works. Yes, I recommend.

Conclusion: Great great pattern and outcome.
